Pretzel, Ham and Cheddar Kabobs

Do you pack lunch for your kids? I do and now that Noah’s been in school for almost two months, I’ve definitely gotten into a rut and have resorted to sandwiches every day. A couple days a week, I forget to pack lunch the night before so I throw something together quickly that morning before we run out the door. Even though he loves them, I could tell he was getting tired of peanut butter and jelly or ham sandwiches.

I brainstormed about some of the things he loves and decided to cut them into chunks and skewer them rather than make them into a sandwich. Because what kids doesn’t love food on a stick? And simply presenting it in a different way created excitement and encouraged him to eat it.

They get 20 minutes to eat, which I’m not sure about you but that’s hard for my kindergartener when there’s chatting and observing to do. He often comes home with most of his lunch still in his lunch box. But when he knew he was having these fun kabobs, he was excited to eat them and he came home with every last bit gone.

You can even put your kids to work like I did. Noah got his knife and cut everything into chunks and helped me thread them onto the kabobs. I’m all for child labor in the kitchen. It doesn’t always make my life easier because it usually takes twice as long and makes a bigger mess but he’s learning to love food and to be responsible so he will be able to cook for himself when he’s grown (putting a frozen pizza in the oven is NOT cooking, *cough* Joel).

Pretzel bread is a favorite of ours and Noah is definitely a ham kind of guy so I combined those along with some sharp cheddar to create a delicious little kabob. Serve with some mustard on the side for dipping.
