We have a little tradition at our house for the first day of school. I always have little individual cups of dirt and worms ready for the kids after their first day of school.
My chocolate loving kids adore the tradition and look forward to it every year. But as we all know, this year is going to look so different.
We’re starting remote so it won’t be the getting off the bus and running into the house for your treat kind of day.
So instead, we’re mixing up the tradition a little and sharing it all with you. Instead of the pudding and oreos, we’re creating a Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Pie. It just feels right.
What is Dirt and Worms?
Have you ever heard of dirt and worms? As you can tell, it’s a big deal in our house.
It consists of chocolate pudding, tons of crushed oreos and cool whip all mixed together for the dirt element. Then it’s topped with gummy worms.
You can choose to make a big bowl of it or make it in individual mini bowls for a fun mini dessert.
If you aren’t a chocolate fan I have a vanilla version that we call Beaches on the blog that is equally adored. It’s topped with gummy sharks of course.

How to Make Dirt and Worms Ice Cream Pie
The process for making this ice cream pie could not get easier. Start by grabbing out your cookies and cream ice cream. It needs to be somewhat softened so that it will easily spread in the cookie crust.
Leave it on the counter for 15 to 20 minutes. Once softened, spread the ice cream carefully in the crust. The crust can easily break so be cautious of that.
Next, drizzle over the hot fudge and spread it over the ice cream as best as you can. It gets cold when it hits the ice cream so it may not spread perfectly but it will taste delicious all the same.
Cover with plastic wrap then foil and place in the freezer to solidify the ice cream again. When you are ready to serve, remove from the freezer and allow it to sit on the counter for about 10 minutes to make it easier to cut.
Cut into slices and top with desired amount of gummy worms.
So Much Fun
This is such a fun dessert to serve to your kids or the kids at heart in your life. Who doesn’t love ice cream on a hot summer day?!
It would be a great option for an end of summer party or potluck (once we can have those again).
No matter where you serve it, the ice cream, cookie crust, gummy worm combo is sure to be a huge hit.
