I’ve always loved having simple, minimal ingredient recipes in my back pocket for days when I haven’t planned dinner or don’t really feel like cooking.

Those recipes that don’t take much shopping or brain power. This Beef Lo Mein is one of those recipes.

The ingredients are easy to find at any grocery store and we’re talking less than 30 minutes from start to finish. I don’t know what else we need in life.

Ingredients for Beef Lo Mein

Here’s what you need to grab to make your own Beef Lo Mein at home:

  • Beef broth
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Honey
  • Fresh broccoli
  • Shredded cabbage
  • Shredded carrots
  • Garlic
  • Flank or flat iron steak
  • Lo mein noodles
  • Canola oil
  • Green onions

Ok, so the list may seem a little long for an easy recipe but I promise it comes together in a snap.

Sometimes lo mein noodles can be hard to find. Check in the Asian section of your grocery store first. If you don’t have any luck, linguine noodles work well for a substitute.

The Beef in Beef Lo Mein

You can use either flank steak or flat iron steak for this recipe. The key is to thinly slice it against the grain to ensure it’s super tender.

This shortens the fibers in the meat and makes them easier to chew.

How can you tell it’s against the grain? Look at the lines in the steak, cut thinly perpendicular to those lines and it’s against the grain.

How to Prepare

This Beef Lo Mein comes together pretty quickly so you want to be sure to prepare ingredients in a certain order and have all the elements ready to go.

Start off by bring a big pot of water to a boil and cook the noodles. While that’s happening whisk together the sauce ingredients and set aside.

Next, cut the broccoli into small bite-size pieces and thinly slice the beef. Once everything is prepped it’s go time.

Heat a large wok or skillet over medium high heat. Add the canola oil then quickly saute the beef for about 1 minute per side.

Add the garlic and veggies and continue to cook until they wilt down a bit. This will take 2 to 3 minutes.

Add the noodles and sauce to the skillet and toss to coat. Cook another 2 minutes to allow the sauce to thicken a bit and coat everything.

Top with sliced green onions and it’s time to eat.

Like Takeout But Better

I love takeout as much as the next guy but hear me out. This is so simple to make. I buy the cabbage and carrots shredded to make things super easy.

You can even find stir-fry beef in the meat department to make things quicker on that front too.

When you make it at home, you know exactly what goes into the recipe and you can alter it to your taste. Add more veggies if that’s your thing. Change out the beef for chicken, pork or shrimp.

You can have it done and on the table faster than the delivery wait time. And it tastes like the real deal.
