Have you ever made your own hot cocoa mix? If you haven’t you are in for a REAL treat.
Not only is it super simple to make but it is a million times better than any mix you’ll find at the store.
Make Your Own Hot Cocoa Mix
You only need 5 ingredients to make your own hot cocoa mix at home. And I’m betting you already have 4 of them in your pantry.
Here’s what you need:
Make sure you use a high quality cocoa powder to ensure you end up with a super rich, chocolatey hot cocoa. I linked up my absolute favorite one above.
You can find powdered milk at any grocery store, usually near the powdered coffee creamers or cocoa mixes.
The cornstarch may seem like a weird addition but it just slightly thickens the hot cocoa and adds to the rich texture.
The kosher salt helps balance out and slightly cut the sweetness of the cocoa mix. Just like in any sweet recipes, the salt really brings out and balances the sweetness.
Mixing Ratio
Mix all the ingredients together in a bowl until it’s fully mixed and uniform in color.
When you’re ready for a cup of hot cocoa, heat 1 cup of milk until it’s steaming. Please, oh please, use milk. Water just won’t give you the same rich, creamy results.
Stir in 1/3 cup of the hot cocoa mix and stir until well mixed. If you want it a little extra rich, reduce the milk to 3/4 cup.
Storage
Store in an airtight jar or container in your pantry for use any time the craving strikes.
This mix will keep for up to 3 months. But I sincerely don’t think it will last that long anyway.
Free Printable
If you want to give this hot cocoa mix to a friend, neighbor or loved one as a gift, I’ve included a fun free printable to include with the jar of homemade mix.
You could include some adorable mugs and a bag of mini marshmallows along with the mix to make it the whole package.
Arrange it in a basket with the recipe card and you’re good to go. I know I would love a hot cocoa kit as a gift.
You can download the recipe card printable below by clicking on the “Download Here” button below.
I had mine printed on cardstock so that it will hold up better to spills and so that it has that recipe card feel. It’s sized to the standard recipe card measurements so it will fit in a recipe box if you’re old school like me.
