After visiting a local popcorn shop with a friend I discovered there is such a thing as puppy chow popcorn and I knew it had to be recreated as soon as possible for my favorite internet friends.
I mean, we HAVE to make it a thing now.
I am a major fan of popcorn as evidenced here, here and here so I’m always up for the challenge of a new and delicious popcorn flavor at home. And this one was extra fun and way easy to make.
A Simple Treat
You only need 4 ingredients for this puppy chow popcorn. Chocolate, peanut butter, popcorn kernels and powdered sugar. I always have all those things in my pantry waiting to turn into something delicious.
If I’m making simple popcorn to snack on, I like a stove top oil popped situation with salt at the end. But when I’m making popcorn to coat with all the goodness I always start with popcorn kernels and my favorite air popper.
It only takes a couple of minutes and keeps the popcorn plain and simple so that you can add all kinds of flavor.
All About the Chocolate
Now let’s talk chocolate. My personal favorite is dark chocolate for this recipe. Because there is sugar in the peanut butter and a thick coating of powdered sugar, this popcorn is plenty sweet.
The dark chocolate helps balance out the sweetness and adds a bit more richness to this yummy treat.
Semi-sweet chocolate would definitely be a good option too if that’s what you have on hand. I personally don’t love milk chocolate, it’s just too sweet for me, but if that’s what you love and you like a super sweet treat you can also use it in this recipe. It really depends on your sweet tooth level.
Breaking Down the Puppy Chow Popcorn Process
If you’ve made puppy chow (or muddy buddies) before, you know it’s a pretty simple process. Melt the chocolate chips and peanut butter together in a bowl. I melt mine in the microwave in 30 second increments but you can also melt them over a double boiler for even more control over the melting process.
The melted peanut butter and chocolate is then drizzled over the popcorn and gently stirred until it’s completely coated. At this point, I like to put the bowl of goodness in the refrigerator for 10 minutes to allow the chocolate to set a little bit.
If you coated it right away with powdered sugar it would pretty much soak into the chocolate then you would have to use twice as much to get it coated.
That results in a way too sweet treat. The few minutes in the refrigerator starts the setting process for the chocolate and helps the powdered sugar stick.
Once coated, put it back in the refrigerator for the chocolate to completely harden. Then you’re done. Honestly, it only takes about 10 minutes of actual work plus about 30 minutes of chilling time. I can totally get behind that kind of dessert.
